Who we are
First Class Operator is a study service for power engineers: a study dashboard, practice exams and equipment simulators at firstclassoperator.com. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and the choices you have.
For privacy questions and requests, write to [email protected].
What we collect
Only what it takes to run your account.
- Email address
- How you sign in, and where we send the codes you ask for.
- Name
- The name you enter, so your workspace can greet you.
- Password
- Stored only as a salted scrypt hash. We never see or store it in readable form.
- Practice progress
- Exam attempts, results, flashcard states, reference highlights and preferences, saved to your account so they follow you across devices.
- Email codes
- One-time codes for confirming your email and resetting your password. They are stored hashed and expire after 15 minutes.
Technical data
- Your IP address, and the email address or account a request is for, are used briefly to protect the service from abuse, by rate limiting repeated requests. These counters expire within a day and are then cleared.
- Cloudflare, our host, processes request data such as your IP address and browser details to deliver and secure the site.
Why we use it
We use your information to:
- run your account and sign you in;
- send the codes you ask for;
- save your progress;
- keep the service secure.
The only emails we send are account emails: the codes you ask for and, rarely, notice of a significant change to this policy. We send no marketing email, and we do not sell or share your personal information for marketing.
Who processes it
Two service providers handle data on our behalf.
- Cloudflare
- Hosting, our database, and Turnstile, the bot check on sign-up, log-in and password reset. Turnstile may process browser and device signals to tell people from bots.
- Resend
- Sends verification and password-reset emails.
Your account data is stored in the United States, in Cloudflare’s Western North America database region, and requests are handled on Cloudflare’s global network, at the location nearest you. It may therefore be accessed under the laws of those countries.
How long we keep it
We keep account data for as long as your account exists.
You can delete your account at any time from Account settings → Delete account, which asks for your password. Deleting it immediately removes your account, name, password hash, sessions and saved progress from our database. Our database keeps point-in-time backups for up to 30 days for recovery from faults, so deleted data is gone from those backups within 30 days; we do not restore them for any other reason.
Email codes expire after 15 minutes, and abuse-protection counters expire within a day and are then cleared. Delivery logs held by email providers follow their own retention.
Your rights
You can:
- ask for a copy of your data;
- correct your name in Account settings, or your email address by writing to us;
- delete your account;
- ask a question or make a complaint.
For any of these, write to [email protected]. You may also contact the privacy regulator where you live, such as the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
First Class Operator is for people training to be power engineers. It is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
When this policy changes, we’ll post the new version on this page and update the effective date. If a change is significant, we’ll also email account holders.
